| ACOMA MANTA, circa 1850 |
The illusion of foreground and background that was the common goal of all Navajo blanket weavers has its origins in embroidered mantas (women's shawls) from Acoma, Hopi and Zuni Pueblos. The use of blue handspun yarn and raveled red yarn in Acoma mantas is truly inspired, as in the placement of the pairs of blue and red leaves at the edges of this manta's brown center, and in the luminous focal point of the central embroidered medallion. - Joshua Baer
