| CLASSIC NAVAJO CHILDS SERAPE |
The hallmark of classic Navajo weaving is the creation of the illusion of space. Almost all classic Navajo blankets give the eye the illusion of a foreground, a background and some distance between the two. The best Navajo blankets use minimal amounts of design to create and reinforce their illusions.
In this fine, understated child's serape, horizontal stripes create the background, while diagonal stripes create the foreground. By using the same colors in both the horizontal and the diagonal stripes, the weavers of the serape introduced the element of harmony between background and foreground. In some areas of the serape, the red yarns of the background actually feed into the red yarns of the foreground. The result is a kind of visual music that simultaneously soothes and challenges the eye. - Joshua Baer
