009 Acoma, c. 1890 - 1900

10thThe double rainbow arcs on this jar undulate around the circumference in a more fluid manner than on the jars in several other of our illustrations. The bird is quite similar to the parrot on the jar in Fig. 2, although here a few of the frilly embellishments have been omitted or replaced with more solid renditions (e.g., the crest above the parrot's head). Also in contrast to the more elaborate parrot jars, this one has a much more static layout of its configurations of foliage. It is interesting to note that the design lying below the lowest dipping of the rainbow arcs is almost identical to the structure lying in that same position on the jar in Fig. 18. The form of this jar is less like that of the rest of our Acoma examples (except for Fig. 1) and more like that of the Zia jar in Fig. 8. In many cases, subtle features of vessel form often give important clues to both age and village of origin.
